What is in a name, What is in a Title – Todd Glassberg on The Front Porch

I am having the morning cup of Joe. Oh as I am sure you understood that to be a cup of Coffee. Are you insulted , I referred to the coffee as a cup of Joe. Recently, I read an article from the associated press

“ACLU asks Vikings stadium not to use Redskins name”
“A protracted fight over the name and logo of football’s Washington Redskins prompted a request that Minnesota Vikings stadium officials take special steps when the team comes to town next month for a nationally televised game.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota appealed for operators of the Metrodome to refrain from using the name and imagery and asked that media outlets do the same. Executive Director Chuck Samuelson called the Redskins name offensive and hurtful to Native Americans, some of whom have made similar requests.”

Now I can truly understand that a percentage of people will take umbrage with a perceived deragatory nickname or title. But folks this the 21st century and children being born in this era have no idea about the history or hardships of the American Indians. They generally pay attention to the sport , the colors and the players. Actually the more we gentrify our past the more we lose opportunities to provided a learning opportunity. An opportunity to overcome human nature.

It’s not the words that bring insult, it is the people spouting the words in an inhumane manner. Think about it.
