It has been awhile since I have felt the desire to write. It usually stems from some internal thought process or turmoil that I am thinking about.
This morning out of the blue, I started singing
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you (Woo, woo, woo)
What’s that you say, Mrs. Robinson
Joltin’ Joe has left and gone away
(Hey, hey, hey…hey, hey, hey)
Why am I singing this song, I wondered what it meant to Paul Simon and why did he include Joe DiMaggio in the lyrics. Did it just fit the bars and the beat better. Paul Simon said,” that DiMaggio represented the traditional American values and the lines were a tribute to his unpretentious heroic stature in America, especially in a time when the popular culture distorts our perceptions of athletes/heros” .
With the media explosion today, we are exposed to Public reporting of transgressions and apologies and prime-time interviews about private sexual matters, I guess I am mourning the loss of grace and dignity, privacy, and the power of his silence.”
Look at the path as a culture, we have taken since the explosion of the internet and 24 hour Television programming. We need content and content is king. With every great step forward, there are 10 steps backward. Our lives and the lives of our heroes are statues to build and to destroy.
The lives of our people are inventory for gossip that is reported as informational news. Note though our consumption is what drives this. Let us be more thoughtful on what we need to know and what we want to know.
